1. Brush Properly – One of the most effective things you can do is brush your teeth. You want to position the brush at a 45-degree angle and you will want it to make contact with both your gum line and the surface of the teeth. Use an up-and-down and back-and-forth motion when you’re brushing your teeth, but do it gently because you don’t want to cause bleeding.
When it’s time to clean the inside surfaces, perform the same motion and go gently. Finally, after you are done brushing your teeth, you’ll want to brush both the roof of your mouth and your tongue. Doing this will remove bacteria and help keep your breath fresh.
Brushing twice per day is ideal. However, if you’re too busy and you cannot brush twice per day, then at least use water to rinse your mouth out after you eat. This will reduce the amount of food in your mouth and will also decrease the amount of bacteria in your mouth.
2. Floss – Flossing seems to be more of a chore than the other oral health care routines and it’s easy to forget to do it, but you should take the time to floss because it will remove particles of food and other substances that brushing can’t remove. Flossing lets you get between your teeth, which your toothbrush can’t reach or where mouthwash can’t work that well. Ideally, you should floss once per day, at the very least.
3. Don’t Use Tobacco – Tobacco wreaks havoc on your teeth and it can lead to periodontal issues and oral cancer. Not only that, but tobacco has a horrible smell to it and you will likely have to use agents to mask the smell. For example, if you smoke, then you might use coffee, tea or eat candy to mask your bad breath, which is not good for your teeth. In fact, more damage can occur as a result.
4. Go Easy On The Coffee, Soda, And Alcohol – These drinks can deplete the level of calcium in your body if you drink too much of them, and this can lead to gum disease and tooth decay. Additives like corn syrup and food dye are found in many unhealthy drinks, which can cause your teeth to turn yellow or they will have a dull look to them. The best drinks to go for includes drinks like milk, which will help build stronger enamel and make your teeth stronger. Water is a good choice too because it keeps your body hydrated for longer than drinks with sugar.
5. Consume Vitamins And Calcium – Calcium is good for your teeth and bones, and this is why you should eat stuff like yogurt, cheese, other dairy products and orange juice that has been fortified. A calcium supplement is worth considering using, but keep in mind the dosage amount depends on how old you are and what the prescription recommends. Both calcium and vitamin D are essential for gum and teeth health, and vitamin B complex can help protect your teeth and gums from bleeding and cracking. Other nutrients that are important include potassium, copper, iodine, and zinc.
6. Go To The Dentist – Go to the dentist twice per year. They will give you a complete hygiene treatment. Not only that, but the dentist will perform an exam using x-rays. They will be able to tell if you need future dental treatments or detect any issue that concerns dental health.
7. Use Mouthwash – Mouthwash is not always useful because some of it contains chemicals that aren’t good for you. However, mouthwashes that contain Listerine or chlorine dioxide can kill off bacteria inside your mouth and it will keep bad breath at bay and play a role in maintaining strong teeth. You do need to continue brushing and flossing regularly, eat well and see a dentist because mouthwash alone is not strong enough to do the trick. Use it alongside those things.
8. Dental Symptoms – If you are experiencing dental symptoms such as a toothache or pain in the jaw, see a dentist right now. There may be an underlying cause for the symptoms. A dentist will find out what that cause is.
9. The Bigger Picture – You want to look and understand the bigger picture. For example, taking care of your oral health allows you to keep dental bills low and maintain your looks.
